San Jose Semaphore
What it's this? The four circles spin around and create the entire text of Thomas Pynchon's "The Crying of Lot 49."
Read about the semaphore here. The people who figured this thing out were obviously very dedicated. They make Robert Langdon look like the chump he really is.

Yeah, it's basically four circles that spin all day all night. I thought they were representations of the big wheels for the elevators at first, but they were running constantly at like 3 in the morning. Then I thought it was a clock, but it wasn't cyclic.
Oh and what? I got it posted to boingboing. w00t me.
